Chijmes Singapore Comes To Live At Night

23 July 2009 No Comment

I had a wonderful time with a bunch of my friends at Chijmes Singapore in celebration of a special occasion. We dined at the Carnivore @ Chijmes, a Brazilian Churrascaria where we had a fun-filled experience of eating in a very unusual way (an array of meat, ranging from beef to chicken heart were barbecued on large skewers and served to your table by the Pasadors – meat waiters, slicing the meat into your plate).

With the night still young, we hangout at the Insomnia Singapore, where we drank to our hearts till the wee hours of the morning with the companion of its splendid Live Band entertainment.

Sitting in a four acre land right at the heart of Singapore, Chijmes Singapore (pronounced “chimes”) is now a popular night hotspot with the yuppies, office executives and tourists. The complex consists of various restaurants, clubs and shops where many like to meet up, eat and drink.

What is extraordinary about this complex is that it was once a Catholic convent known as Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) founded back in 1854. I know it is difficult to imagine but, the Gothic styled chapel and the distinctive colonial architecture unveiled every characteristic of a convent, which is the main reason Chijmes is such an exciting place of interest.

This historical architecture was given a facelift with modern restoration. Most of the original foundations were either conserved or restored. And today, Chijmes Singapore is declared as a national heritage site, making it an attraction to both the locals and visitors. Be it taking a stroll or driving along Victoria Street, it is a landmark not easy to miss.

To me, the concept of transforming a formal Catholic Convent into a place for eating and drinking, spa and shopping is just brilliant. This charming backdrop of the historical landscape also makes Chijmes Singapore an ideal venue for social functions such as event launches and private cocktail parties.

Having attended numerous wedding receptions at Chijmes, there is something worth mentioning – the Chijmes Hall.
The old chapel of the 19th century convent is now the Chijmes Hall. With the enchanting Gothic styled chapel and beautiful stained glass windows, I can easily understand why the Chijmes Hall is the favorite venue for young couples looking for that perfect place for that special day.

Although quiet during the day, Chijmes Singapore comes to live at night with patrons clustering around the sunken courtyard where most of the restaurants and wine bars are located. I was particularly impressed with the night setup at Chijmes where the whole place sparkled with dazzling lights hung around trees. The great ambience was extremely romantic which made me want to celebrate.

There is an extensive selection of Chijmes restaurants, with cuisine from Chinese to Mediterranean to choose from. For wine lovers, you may take your pick from the wine cellar of Capella, La Cave or Esmirada. For Chinese food lover, make your way to the Le Garden Restaurant for a sumptuous Tim Sum Cantonese cuisine – you will love it. Besides, there are many other restaurants featuring Turkish, Western, Italian, Tapas, South American, Japanese and Vietnamese menu. You are certain to find something you’ll like to eat here.

For the die-hard party animals, the La Baroque (occupying the former China Jump) promises you an electrifying live rock music experience. I heard they even pledge Wednesday nights as Girls and Guys Night, offering free flow of drinks from 9pm to 11.30pm. Now gals and guys, that is definitely a call for a toast at La Baroque every Wednesday night.

The Insomnia Bar is another exceptional party spot at Chijmes. Matching its name, Insomnia is a 24 hour bar cum restaurant that never sleeps. The bar offers live band playing music from the 70’s, 80s and 90’s with DJs staging a continuous musical scores that will make your evening come alive. Both assert superb party settings perfect for a night hangout.

A signature of rich cultural heritage coupled with a premium lifestyle of music, dining and entertainment, no wonder Chijmes Singapore has always been one of the preferred Singapore nightlife destinations among locals and foreign visitors.
