I couldn’t believe that I bumped into my university room mates in Fullerton Hotel Singapore.

“You should be in the States… What brings you here?’’ I asked expectantly.

“Fullerton Hotel Singapore”! An answer that Andrew spilled out without any hindsight or reservation…

What happen was that Andrew was here in Singapore for a 3 days trade fair, but what really interest him was not so much of the trade fair (I would have sack him if I am his boss! But there again he was just being honest) but because of his fascination with the Fullerton Hotel Singapore.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

He has heard much and raving about the Fullerton Hotel Singapore from travel magazines. But nothing beat those from his own colleagues’ hotel experience, which he grown tired of listening (he must be listening with jealousy).

Initially I was a little shocked…but when I regained my composure, I was not surprised by what he had told me. He went on to show me his room and rave about the beauty, grace and comfort of the hotel. What followed was simply a reversal of role. Now I was treated like a tourist while he showed me the many splendid of Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Like a little boy…whose dream was being realized…I could see his enthusiasms and satisfaction in his eyes.

Not many hotels in this city can lay claim to a place in Singapore history. Built in 1928, the Fullerton Hotel Singapore building has witnessed and survived countless historical moment and now, a present day marvel after the transformation and preservation. There is something about Fullerton Hotel Singapore; charming, mesmerizing, and alluring. The mystical, classical yet contemporary style structure lends a touch of history to a young city nation.

Fullerton Hotel Lobby

The lobby looked really astounding and pleasing to me. Perhaps it was the greenery tall plant (it immediately caught my eyes). It was cleverly planted around the lobby area. The lobby instantly had a touch of green nature, giving me a very refreshing feeling. The bamboo kind of plant, together with the high column structure made the walk in to the hotel lobby very majestic and tall. I particularly loved the beautiful koi (carp) in the Atrium pool. There were also antiques and artwork displayed around the public area; very pleasing indeed. What’s more, the place was brightly lighted up and projected a very tropical feel…

Fly in
Restroom

Having met up with Andrew and chatted, I took the opportunity to have a look at the restroom. After all, the restroom was the place where high standard of hygiene and cleanliness were set. And I was not disappointed! It was sparkling clean. And how thoughtful! The hotel actually took great pain to input a small fly in the urination cubicles. The motive was obvious – Aim gentleman! (hahaha…)

Perhaps it was lunch time; I noticed that the lobby was surprisingly crowded. There seemed to be lots of human traffic and movement (perhaps due to the fact that it is very close to the business district). Nobody greeted us…and I noticed not many hotel staff around either (they must be very busy).

The restaurants and bars in the hotel were truly a unique experience. The Courtyard located in the brightly lit atrium lobby served great afternoon English Tea. It also featured a wonderful Chocolate Buffet of sinful chocolate creation. And you will be fascinated with the Chocolate Fountain. Hmm…chocolate lovers beware! As for Andrew…he thoroughly enjoyed it; having shared a room with him in the States – he is a chocolate addict.

Serving a wide range of international dishes, the Town Restaurant enabled us to slow down in the hot sunny day and enjoy a stunning view of the Singapore River. A wonderful place for al fresco dining. The restaurant was modern and spacious; it was a perfect place to relax and enjoy the cool breeze… Service wise, it was purely first class. The restaurant staffs were attentive and quick in changing our dirty plates for a new replacement. Certainly, there were other establishments like Jade Restaurant, Post Deli Express to name a few.

Fullerton Hotel Room

The room gave a nice feeling; cozy and warm. When I stepped in I could sense a mesmerizing scent from the room… The room was not exactly big but was nicely decorated (you could request for Quay side rooms for bigger room and better view). The bed itself and linens no doubt was of the highest quality. The bed linen and towels were regularly changed several times a day. However, Andrew commented that the bed mattress was a little hard to his liking. But personally I prefer it to be hard. I noticed that the bed was the highest that I have experienced.

“I was practically jumping up and down from the bed’’ commented Andrew. I laughed as he is not very tall after all. Hmm…I remembered I used to make fun of him…calling him Strawberry Shortcake!!

Oh yeah… there was even a pillow menu to choose from if you were not satisfy with the comfort level of the pillow.

The room had a big marble bathroom and an impressive bench space at the sink and mirror. The bathtub was large, could easily accommodate two adults. The room service was excellent and quick in response. However, it would be nice if the in-room internet connection was provided free of charge…

Fullerton Hotel Swimming Pool

The swimming pool provides another stunning and breath-taking view of the river from the terrace, overlooking Boat Quay and the Asian Civilization Museum. To view and lounge by the pool side with such nice view was really a great treat. However I just thought that the pool was a little bit small. The room service also serves all the way to the pool side.

The location of the Fullerton Hotel Singapore is great. It is only about 15 min walk to numerous shopping centers like Marina Square and Suntec City. For those who like performing arts, Esplanade is just 5 min away.

Feedback from Andrew was simply exceedingly beautiful. Bewitched by Fullerton Hotel Singapore, everything just seemed to fall perfectly for him. I wouldn’t think Andrew will give a true, unbiased reflection; except for all the positive and greatness of the hotel.

Overall, I like the feel and look of the hotel, very colonial, and nicely decorated.

Raffles Hotel Lobby

Raffles Hotel Singapore, a luxury hotel that I long to stay. I have heard enough to make an expensive decision – a 2 night date with Raffles Singapore. It cost a bomb to me but no regret.

Stepping inside the hotel, I saw a lobby design inspired by the 19th century Victorian era. This old English classical setup provides tourist a feel of nostalgia. You are like living in the city but staying in an ancient Victorian house.

“Good afternoon Mr Whelan” a staff greeted me with a broad smile. The hotel staffs’ greeted me upon arrival and departure each time I stepped into the lobby. It was a fantastic feeling and for once I felt like a VIP!

However the lobby seemed to be a little bit crowded, mainly of the small floor area that was always filled with tourists.

Raffles Hotel Singapore

The rooms were 19th century British, very clean and authentic. It was spacious and the high ceiling makes them airy. The wide roofed garden in the room adds magnificence to them. The décor of the rooms were very traditional with touches of sophistication all over.

Raffles Hotel Room

The design of the room was catered to the taste of each customer visiting the hotel. The bed was extremely comfortable and the marble bathroom was large and nice. Each room has its own bellboy who arrive in a seconds of the push of a button.

Even the toilets were exotic, marbled and aided with all modern equipment.

The Raffles Hotel Singapore is divided into 4 wings and has wonderful gardens acting as buffers between two sections.

When I was touring around the vicinity, I saw lot of plants around the surrounding. It gave me a very tropical feel in a city area. Hmm…not sure if you can warm to the idea of living in a place with two distinctive feel. It was just a step away from history and back to modern city in a matter of second.

As I explored further, I was impressed with the range of excellent bars and restaurants, making The Raffles Hotel Singapore, one of the most refine establishment for food and dinning.

High tea in the Billard Room (for the colonial experience) was much better than the Tiffin in the main restaurant (food was average in my opinion).

Tropical feel @ Raffles Hotel

The Long Bar has a great atmosphere (of course, we drank the customary Singapore Slings which is a must try) When I stepped into the Long Bar, I was greeted with carpet full of crushed peanut shells. In facts, it is a tradition in Long Bar to dispose peanut shell on the floor boards. But for those clean freaks, you might want to stay out of the door…

In the evening hours, you could hear the nightlife and band music associated with these clubs. This might spark you to life and urge you to spring out of your bed for a drink. However, if you wish to spend a quiet night, with a little tolerance, the noise will be softened by 10pm. It no big deal and wasn’t all that bad.

The pool area is small but very special and charming. It opens 24 hrs a day. I had my share of midnight swim in the beautiful rooftop pool. It was truly a memorable experience. The spa was also lovely.

The hotel made me feel special from the moment I arrived to the moment I ciao.

The Raffles Hotel Singapore is neither a flashy nor contemporary setup. If you’re looking to be treated differently in a very unique historical setting and be transported back in time, this is definitely the hotel of the choice. But I must warn you…it comes with a big Price Tag!

Ritz Carlton Singapore

The Ritz Carlton Singapore is the centerpiece of the Millennia Singapore complex in the heart of Marina Center and is designed to be an architectural landmark.

Sadly I cannot fandom the design structure of the building. Call me an architectural idiot. It seems to be rather square and to be honest I am not really impress with the exterior façade viewing from outside.

However, according to my friend Ian, the unique design of the hotel actually “floats” 120 feet above ground – ensuring unobstructed and panoramic views of the city skyline and the Marina Bay.

Internally, it was pure captivating. The place was brightly litted up. There were many windows that allow light to penetrate to the hotel. The entrance design was futuristic, large and welcoming.

The main characteristic of this luxury hotel seemed to be the water feature. It was prominently displayed in the lobby and water seemed to be flowing down from every part of the building. Tall bamboos were used to blend into the building together with the soothing sound of the flowing water and the visual effect of the water feature.

Entrance of Ritz Carlton Hotel

I could not really remember, why I landed myself in the Ritz Carlton Singapore, but I certainly could remember the service rendered to me by the friendly and passionate staffs. They did not just tell me how to walk to the Marina Square (a shopping area) or merely performing finger pointing of direction, instead they SHOWED me! The staff walked me there… and it was done voluntarily without even me requesting. I was that impressed! Hmm…I wonder what if I will to ask where is the city train – a distant from the hotel – the staff would surely oblige to walk with me.

Bamboos in Ritz Carlton

“How are you gentleman?” I was greeted politely by the staff everywhere I go. It was not just merely a greeting, it was the way they greet you – with a real sincere smile. The whole Ritz Carlton Singapore was surrounded with warm and polite staffs. Every part of the hotel, there were ready staffs preparing to assist you. You just could not seem to miss them… Every interaction with the staff was fantastic – everyone going further than necessary to ensure our stay was perfect.

The rooms gave me a feeling that they were bigger than other hotel rooms in the city. The rooms itself were enormous and very comfortable, overlooking the Marina Bay. The bed was very large and very comfortable. And there was no doubting the quality of the sheet and bedding material…

Bathtub with a view

The highlight of the room was nevertheless its bathroom! The famous octagonal window just in front of the endless bathtub was astonishing! The bathtub could accommodate 2 people without struggle, and let you have a fantastic sink while admiring the stunning and glorious panorama! Marble was all around…

The room was serviced twice a day and each night we would get chocolates by our bedside and slipper placed at the side.

Like the rest of the hotels in Marina, there is a pedestrian linkage to shopping and to Suntec City, making it very convenient for tourists. The Ritz Carlton Singapore is a wonderful hotel for travelers who are seeking for class and exclusivity.

If you are concern with the security of the hotel, I bet you can sleep peacefully. You will know that even those side door opening, a security staff is there to watch over you and of course opening the door for you.

The Ritz Carlton Singapore Club lounge offer 5 food & beverage presentation each day. Simply put, this means that food and drinks are available from 7am till 11pm. Breakfast in the club lounge was very good as well. There was a wide variety of fruits/pastries/hot items. Overall I was quite pleased with the range and choice of food.

The hotel spa and gym/pool area were very good. We had massages on arrival and the Spa staffs were very friendly and hospitable… The pool side was very relaxed and tranquil. We often noticed the staff changing the towels on the chairs to maintain the hygienic level in the pool. Interestingly, even the toilets were not spared. The toilets used hand towels instead of paper to dry your hand…

If you want to experience the famous bathtub with a sensational view and the immaculate service, The Ritz Carlton Singapore will not disappoint you.

Hotel Oriental Singapore

As the name suggests, stepping into Hotel Oriental Singapore does gave you a feel of Asian culture, yet this feel is not too suffocating and overwhelming. Rather, the pleasing artifact places in different corner of the Hotel add a touch of deep heritage to the hotel. A modern feel with Chinese set up as the main theme and background.

The Oriental is Singapore’s only five star Mandarin Oriental hotel, combining spectacular architectural design and a prime waterfront location with the finest standards of comfort and service. This 5 star hotel has been continually singled out to receive international and local recognition, placing it among the world’s top hotels.

We were escorted from our car to our room where we were checked in by a very polite hostess. A whole line of employees greeted us by name when we arrived. Sound impressive right! Somehow the tall and lanky doorman never fails to catch my attention. His smile was always present and made our day.

The Hotel Oriental Singapore building structure seem layered all the way to the top. Once you are out of the room you can overlook the whole hotel interior. Circular in feeling and spiral in sighting, once you step out of your hotel room, is like you are in an opera theater. The set up is simply awesome.

The hotel fine dining restaurant (Cherry Garden, Melt – The World Café, Morton’s bar, Wasabi Bistro) allow the tourists to experience first hand Asian and international cuisine.

The Dolce Vita, serving Mediterranean cuisine, situated by the pool was the best I have ever been to. I like the tranquility and the superb harbour view looking out from the outdoor terrace. Simply breathtaking!

We went to the Mortons Steakhouse one night and the service was simply first class. We weren’t shown a menu to order but rather, the waiter came over with a trolley and we were shown the various cut of meat on a plate and various vegetables to choose from. The food was kind of expensive but we think it was well worth it.

The hotel lobbies cleverly include art décor which feature rich ancient Chinese curving. The ancient arts Chinese history was sporadically displayed, never clustered and never imposing.

Impressive Oriental Art Deco

The walk in the lobby exuded an air of peace, quiet and calm. The huge wall feature curving at the lobby represented the ancient Chinese heritage. The goddess statue at the 2nd level displayed prominently beside the lift, add a touch of Oriental.

Everything seemed to slow down – no rush, no hurry in the Hotel Oriental Singapore. Perhaps it was the lighting that plays into my emotion. The place was not as bright and can be a little dim. Partly also due to the design using dark materials to make the place feel cozy and warm, it did make me feel at ease.

We were offered an option to upgrade to a Club room. And yes, we were glad we did! The room was spacious and well fitted. The bed was inviting, soft and comfortable. The bathroom (huge and nice) made in marble and everything just seem so right…The attention to detail was outstanding. The Hotel Oriental Singapore has a very good view from the upper rooms.

Hotel Oriental Singapore Interior

The design of the Club lounge was charming and the feel was so comfortable you could simply just sit there with a cup of coffee for a great long time. The Club lounge had one of the most varieties of breakfast menu of any of the Club lounges as compared to other hotels. With free flowing champagne and the vast choice of items cooked to order for breakfast, it was sensational.

No Regret. Just pay a little more and go for the Club rooms… The breakfast in the club is just unbelievable, as is the evening cocktails and the stunning view from the club lounge is just as magnificent.

The service around the pool was nice and friendly. The pool deck had a great view of Singapore! The pool was also next to a small but adequate gym. From sorbets, water and ice cold fruit, provided every half hour or so, to having drinks refilled readily, the level of service and manners was akin to traveling first class on an Asian airline.

There was also no shortage of staff around, all ready to serve. The concierge would make anything happen that I need. Whenever I step out/step in of the hotel, there were always two staffs on standby at the door greeting and welcoming me with cheerful smile.

The Hotel Oriental Singapore is strategically position to allow tourists to explore the Marina Promenade with ease. There are entrances that can easily lead to the shopping center and exhibition hall in Suntec City. It is simply so convenient that makes shopping a breeze…

While the Hotel Oriental Singapore might not have the best room setup, the level of service is way better than some of the other luxury hotels. It is worth staying here for the excellent service alone, which is genuine in anticipating needs and being genuinely helpful. I strongly recommend for those tourists who pay more attention to service than any other things else.

I must thank James for helping me to book into The Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore. This 5 star hotel in Singapore is truly amazing…

On stepping into the hotel, I was simply “Wahooo”

While walking towards our room, I was utterly “ Wahoooo”

Slotting the card and entering the room, I was completely “ WAHOoooOooo”

The Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore offers 800 deluxe guestrooms and suites providing some of the city’s most spectacular views. It has won many awards and accolades in the hotel industry.

Pan Pacific Hotel

Hotels situated in the Marina Promenade could be very different yet similar in style and design. The Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore seems taller as compare to other hotels in the premises but the exterior building structure is rather simple. However, looks can be deceiving.

The hotel exhibits a true class of space utilization. Inside, the hotel was spacious and it was not clustered. The hotel lobby was well presented. The stunning atrium in the middle provided lots of seating capacity for tourists to rest and relax. The seating arrangement was not cramp and there were lots of walking space in between. The lobby used bright colours and looked very lively. Once you stepped into the hotel, it just opens your heart up…cheerful and lively.

One thing that caught my eyes was the lift elevator. The lift was built with a see through glass wall where you could overlook the hotel interior. The outdoor glass lifts were also part of the experience! It was brightly lighted up and decorated with different colour. It had a touch of retro and contemporary feeling. As it towered up the landing, it just reminded me about the fun fair wheel whereby I could overlook the people below me. It was just so tempting; made me want to step into the lift again and again.

My room was clean and spotless. And to my little surprise… it came with the welcome fruits and a box of small chocolate! Three cheers to the staffs for the little thought!

Pan Pacific Hotel Atrium

The beautifully kept deluxe room had a panoramic view of the city. Absolutely stunning! The room was spacious, the bed was huge, and the feeling was simply comfortable. Even the bathtub was huge and had a separate shower.

I particularly enjoyed the one button feature called ‘one service’ . I didn’t have to look around trying to push the right numbers to call front/housekeeping/room service etc… It was just that simple. Convenience and ease is everything in Singapore.

The pool was a great place to relax and read the free magazines. Once you arrived, the staff will present you with a complimentary bottle of water, and even better, when you have finished one, they will bring you another… what a service!

One afternoon, I was trying to locate the link to the Marina Shopping area and I couldn’t. A public area cleaner seemed to notice me, approached me and assisted me. He shown me to the link way, I was so pleased. This is what I called “SERVICE”! Even a lower lever staff was involved in helping a guest to have a pleasant stay in the hotel. The treatment was just another daily routine service rendered to the guests. What can I say further…

The hotel is supportive of arts, with exhibition of drawing display along the walk way. I got to witness many fantastic art pieces and thoroughly enjoy the displayed.

The Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore is well link up to shopping areas and establishment surrounding the hotel. Easy accessibility is one of the reasons why tourists like this hotel. The underground air conditioned shopping can lead you all the way to the MRT (it is a blessing, as the weather here can be very humid and hot).

The Japanese restaurant in the upper lever also provides a touch of serenity in the hotel. Koi pond and the Japanese garden allow tourists to enjoy a quiet moment while having their food. The Japanese tourists in particular will definitely love the setting. Also, remember to try the rooftop Chinese restaurant – food is good; views are stunning!

There are also quite a number of Front office counters ready to serve you. You hardly need to queue. It is a smooth transition from the time you check in to the time you check out. No hassle and no waiting… I felt well pampered from the moment I arrived (include a smooth in-room check-in) to the moment I departed (a quick 30-second check-out).

With the friendly and professional staff, I would highly recommend this 5 star hotel for first timers to Singapore, The Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore!

Swissotel Stamford

Swissotel The Stamford being one of the tallest hotels in the world, stand tall and mighty in the heart of the Singapore city.

I stayed at the Swissotel Singapore during my anniversary for 3 days. The location is superb! With a short turn to the lobby, enter to the peacock alley and there you go – I was in the mall!! The hotel was rather busy with lot of movement in the lobby. Perhaps it was just next to the shopping belt, Raffles City.

There are many malls and stores near the hotel. You can take a short walk from this hotel to Suntec city and Marina Square which gives it a superb location. It is the only hotel which is connected to the train station, making traveling around Singapore so convenient, easy and fun. Most important, it helped me to save cost as well in my traveling expenses.

When I first arrived Swissotel The Stamford, I was standing there for a few minutes in the lobby, trying to figure out where was the check-in counter. I was quickly approached and my query immediately dealt with. This was what I called absolute service. Thumbs Up!

I had a great room on a high floor with a huge and excellent view. The Esplanade and the Merlion could be seen from the window of this hotel. Looking at the circuit for the forthcoming Grand Prix, the harbour view should have a good view of the circuit. And I supposed it was no doubt sold out by now.

Room @ Swissotel Singapore

When it comes to room in the Swissotel The Stamford, I would say I am really impressed. I felt very comfortable and a sense of relaxation. The room was very fragrant and clean. It bathroom was spacious and well fitted.

The room service and housekeeping service was prompt and nothing was a problem – even repeatedly changing the hair conditioner until my wife found the right one.

At first, I was quite unwilling to check into such a big establishment (staff generally would not provide the personal touch of a smaller hotel). But I was wrong! This was not the case of Swissotel The Stamford. The staffs were fabulous. However, I was a little bit disappointed when they charged extra for the usage of their gym facilities. That is strange and unheard of in my travels.

As for food, I did have my breakfast at the Swiss Café. Full buffet with English-typed cooked breakfast – fried eggs or omelettes and others. Service was excellent. Plates cleared quickly and tea/coffee topped up constantly. Talking about food, due to the close proximity of the hotel to Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, both of which were within easy walking distance from the hotel, it was an experience not to be missed.

Equinox Restaurant

My wife and I had dinner and drink at The Equinox Restaurant in the seventieth floor. It was a longest ride in the lift I ever experienced. I could feel the air pressure building up in my ears but we were feeling excited. The Equinox provides a unique dinning experience with a glorious view over the Singapore night skyline. It was breath taking! (Who needs the Singapore Flyer…hmm..?) And it was so happened that the restaurant was playing “Take My Breathe Away” by Jessica Simpson. How timely!

I would certainly recommend Swissotel The Stamford for anyone wanting to be in the central area who wants to explore Singapore on foot as well as having good access to local transport.

Singapore Peranakan food is definitely a MUST TRY when you visit Singapore. You’ll regret if you don’t!!

Deep fried chicken bites marinated in soy sauce (Enche Kabin); Chicken flavoured curry cooked with tamarind juice and belachan(Chicken Kapitan); Water Spinach stir fried with chillies, dried shrimps and belachan (Kangkung Belachan); fried pork rolls in beancurd skin (Ngoh Hiang); prawn sambal (Sambal Udang)… …

*Sambal Belachan – a dipping sauce made of freshly ground chilies, hard shrimp paste & lime juice.

Chicken Kapitan

Peranakan food, as the name implies, is originated from the Peranakans or Straits Chinese. The tribe started from the early 15th century, when the Chinese Princess from the Ming Dynasty was presented to be the bride for the Malacca Sultan. Several hundreds of her entourage that followed her settled down and inter-marrying the local Malays, calling themselves the Peranakans. The men are called Babas, and women called Nyonyas.

Sambal Belacan

Admiring the establishment of the new trading port by Sir Stamford Raffles, many of them migrated south to Singapore. Hence, the Peranakans inherited a mixture of Chinese and Malay cultures, and espoused the English way of life.

The Peranakan cuisine is a specialty uniquely found in south-eastern Asia. You may be able to find some replicates in other countries, but I bet they are not as authentic. Also known as Nyonya Food, (but not Baba Food, because normally the women will prepare the meals) they are an amalgamation of Chinese and Malay dishes, with the extensive use of herbs and spices, especially belachan, turmeric, galangal and pandan leaves. The Peranakan food in Singapore is generally sweeter with a strong flavour of coconut, coriander and dill; comparing to those found in the northern Malaysia which is more sour and spicy.

If you cannot take too spicy food, Singapore Peranakan food is your answer. Simply authentically delicious, DON’T MISS IT!

Ayam Buah Keluak

Among all, my favourite is the Ayam Buah Keluak (Chicken in Black Nut Stew). Braised chicken and minced pork cooked with turmeric, galangal, lemongrass and Indonesian black nut — Buah Keluak. This classic dish is regarded as the representative dish by many Peranakan Food gurus, whom more than often is used to benchmark how well a chef cooks Peranakan dishes.

Besides main dishes, Peranakan desserts are also favourites to many Singaporeans, including myself. They are made with coconut syrup, coconut sugar, glutinous rice and sweet potatoes, and most of them have inviting colours. When I was young, I would always ask mum to buy “nine-layers cake” — Lapis Sagu, from the bakery shop, cause I enjoyed peeling it layer by layer, and eating it slice by slice.

Kueh Lapis, Nine layers cake – Lapis Sagu, Ondeh Ondeh, Angku Kueh, Kueh Salat, Cendol … … Oh mine oh mine, they are just… … just… mouth-watering!

Street of Chinatown

This is Singapore Chinatown!

The Chinese population in Singapore numbered more than 70% of the total population. But not all of Singapore Chinese live in the Chinatown. Back in the 19th century, Sir Stamford Raffles designated this 0.9 square km place to the Chinese immigrants. The rich Chinese cultural heritage has earned the historical district a conservation status by the Singapore government in July 1989.

Better known as “Bull-Cart Water” (牛车水) locally, Singapore Chinatown is now a paradise for good bargains, and heaven for delicious cuisine.

Shopping in Chinatown is one of the favourite itineraries for the tourists and a great place for “unusual” shopping. As you stroll along the various Chinatown streets, you will find lots of shops. Whether you are looking for “good bargain” souvenirs (lots of Merlion and orchid merchandise), traditional handicrafts, Chinese or Asian antiques or affordable silk textile, you are certain to find something you like.

Chinese New Year in Chinatown

However, the best time of the year to stop by Chinatown is during the Chinese New Year festive season (around January to February, depending on the Chinese Lunar calendar). Throughout this festive period, many local Chinese congregate here to buy decorations, goodies and clothing to welcome the New Year..

It is this time, this place, that the entire street of Chinatown is painted in RED. The streets are decorated with huge lanterns that resemble the Chinese animal zodiac of the coming year, and the god of wealth.

The celebration usually begins with a light-up ceremony that marks the start of the festive season coupled with lion and dragon dances, fireworks and fire crackers parade (only allow on this special occasion) to further inject a celebration dose to the shoppers. This strong atmospheric presence of the Chinese New Year festive mood can be felt even on the non-Chinese community.

Long queue in front of BBQ shop

This is also the time where Chinese from all corners of Singapore flow in here to do their last minute Chinese New Year shopping. You can easily spot a 50m human line formed up in front of a famous Bak-Gua (BBQ Pork) shop. It is the busiest and most crowded period of the year in Chinatown.

In order to have a more pleasant shopping experience in the Singapore ChinaTown, you should avoid the afternoon sun. It can be quite hot and humid in the narrow streets. So my advice is, do your outdoor shopping in the evening.

Nevertheless, if the weather gets too hot and humid, or wet; and the shopping bugs are itching you; no worries – the solution – indoor shopping!

Chinatown Point Festive Decoration

The Chinatown Point, an air-conditioned shopping plaza located just next to the exit of the Chinatown MRT station, has a unique design where the shops are laid out in a spiral manner, from one level to another seamlessly. So, you should begin your shopping from the top floor, and slowly stroll to the lower levels.

Apart from the regular shops selling antiques, paintings, calligraphies and art collections, you can also spot some gift shops and specialty shops (Hello Kitty shop for e.g.) in Chinatown Point.

For me, my primary purpose of visting Chinatown is not really to shop, but to satisfy my appetite.

My craving always leads me to those award-winning cuisines at the Peoples’ Park Complex…the exotic claypot frog-leg porridge along Smith Street…the fragrant Hainanese Chicken Rice along Outram Road. It is here in Chinatown Singapore that many of the best local food can be found!

You MUST try them all!

Besides shopping and eating, there are also many places of interest in Singapore Chinatown.

Famous Sri Mariamman Temple

There are many rich heritage architecture buildings for good photo taking. Along Telok Ayer Street, you will find Singapore’s first Chinese Methodist Church and Singapore oldest temple, Thian Hock Keng Temple. These conserved master art pieces were built between 1839 – 1842.

Walking down South Bridge Road, look out for the Sri Mariamman Temple (built in 1843) and the Jamae Mosque (built in 1835).

There is also a Chinatown Heritage Center at Pagoda Street for visitors who are interested to find out more about the rich history of Chinatown.

Oh…last but not least, the money changers in Peoples Park Complex are well-known in offering good rates!!!

Change more money, do more shopping!!!

When I was a young boy, I always pestered my parent to bring me to the Sentosa beach. The fine white sands and the open seas always intrigue me. Now, it’s my turn to be pestered by my two little devils. Perhaps it is in our blood, a family’s gene that is running so intriguingly to the beaches around us.

The excitement my children felt was euphoric (reminded me when I was young) when they realized that Sentosa island has three beautiful beaches: Palawan Beach, Siloso Beach and Tanjong Beach.

Sentosa beach is different from those famous beaches around the world. They have their own character and charm. If you are looking for great waves to surf with your surf board and blue water to trap, you will be disappointed.

Party Beach for the Young and the Restless…

Sentosa Siloso Beach

Instead Sentosa beach of this tropical island offer you a different kind enjoyment. Rather, I term it more of a theme beach. In Siloso beach, you will find beach goers doing activities like canoeing, sea boarding, rollerblading and mountain biking. In fact, Siloso beach is fame for the beach volleyball that is getting very popular with the world beach goers.

Hmm…the thought of those bikinis girls at the Siloso beach smacking the ball can be very alluring.

Sentosa Siloso Beach Bikini Bar

I tend to see the beach as more for the young and the restless, where they can party and have lots of fun. With the live band that perform there and the many dining and shopping outlets along the beach, people can get spoilt by the many establishments.

The region popular yearly Zoukout foam party is held at Siloso beach. I was told…the event can attract 15000 people attending from across the region! A mega beach event held in December, you might not want to miss… just remember to jot it down in your diary.

Everyone Can Be a Formula 1 Race Driver…

Sentosa Luge & Skyride

Around the vicinity of the Siloso beach, I tried the Sentosa Luge & Skyride. It is a self steering gravity driven “vehicle” that powered it way down hill over a track of about 700m .This fun filled activities really made my day. It is safe for all ages and my children really glued to the driver seats. It exhilarating! Go try it…

Another activity we tried was the Flying Trapeze. Well…it is really not that fantastic but it helps to explore the children coordination and the fear for height.

Family Beach, Standing Nearest to the Equator…

Hey Dr Jones, where
are you?(Palawan
Suspension Bridge)

In the Palawan Beach, you experiment another high. The beach lies in the southern stretch of Sentosa beach. Once there, your eyes will immediately track to a suspension bridge that can lead you to a small islet, which is the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia (you will be standing at a point nearest to the equator).

I feel that Palawan Beach is more suitable for family. Bring the children to walk across the Indiana Jones likes bridge if you have watched the latest series of the Indiana Jones movie spanning many generation. Hmm…Harrison Ford would, who knows appear before you, fighting those thieves. You can also bring your kids to the enlightening Animals and Bird Encounters. I sure did! And I am very sure your kids will enjoy it…

The Palawan beach offers a more fun and relax environment (perhaps it is due to the beach offer less accommodation and eatery but certainly not less activities)

Up Close and Personal with Dolphin…

But the ultimate place to visit near the Palawan beach will be the Dolphin lagoon. We took a Palawan beach tram and it took us all the way to the doorstep. We were there 30 min earlier, as we were told it can be very crowded. Anyway I wanted my children to have a good seat and to have a great view with the dolphins.

Synchronized Jumps by
the Pink Dolphins

The show was fantastic! The children were fascinated by the many stuns the dolphin (Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin) performed; you get to see them jumping the hula hoop elegantly, dashing out of the water speedily, touching the ball in great height and dancing gracefully on the water. We managed to get up close and personal with the dolphin, stroking and caressing them, the children snapped a few picture with these intelligent mammals and finally my kids were rewarded with kisses from the pink dolphin. The whole episode was like catching up with the world famous celebrities, the only lacking is their autograph…

It a wonderful moment to treasure and my kids really love it. Palawan beach is a family beach which the kids will enjoy going…

Romantic Tanjong Beach…

Romantic Tanjong Beach

The third Sentosa beach is the Tanjong Beach. When I was there, I saw a few dogs running and some lying down just beside the owners. The beach is relatively secluded, quiet and calm. The beach emits a certain feeling of tranquility and peace. Very laid back and slow. I didn’t really spend much time there with my children. But if I am ever to date my wife again, I know where to bring her. Why? The easterly Sentosa beach is much quieter and I was even lucky to catch a sight of the magnificent sunset while waiting for my wife to feed my children some food. The activities are much tone down here and less developed.

Perhaps it is done on purpose. This part of the Sentosa beach is free from the laughter and bustling of the beach goers… A quiet stroll along the coast with someone special will certainly put you in a mood to make more babies (But please does it in the right place, there are park rangers around). Diehards’ romantic will be hard to give this beach a miss.

Unforgettable Music Show Display by the Sea…

Spectacular Laser Display
by the sea

My day ended with the show Song of the Sea. Situated around the Sentosa beach, the show is a wonderfully crafted pyrotechnics display, spectacularly enhanced music show that is permanently set in the sea. The production is a $30million investment by Sentosa Island to attract more visitors to the island.

My wife especially enjoy the dramatic effects, seated in an open air gallery comfortably after a long day, she had a majestic view of the performance. The bright laser, jet of water shooting from the seas(my children must have wished they have such powerful water gun with them), fires bursting, accompanied by the beautifully synchronized music and what with the live cast (Oscar and his friends) make the evening really enjoyable and unforgettable.

“Hey Bro, wanna go Mustafa Singapore for some shopping?”. This was a text message I send to Ian at about 12.45am as I was still wide awake and couldn’t get to sleep. I was trying my luck on Ian hoping that he was awake as well.

“Are you out of your mind, what time is it now?”…a return message from Ian.

“What the heck…ok, lets go. I am looking for a MP3 player anyway.”…a followed on message from lan.

Ian has always been a gadgets freak and Mustafa Singapore has always been his favorite electronic host because it is here that he gets great bargain prices for some of his latest toys. And that is very true, Mustafa Singapore offers electronic goods at cheaper prices as compared to Funan Shopping Mall or Chinatown. Now, I am not talking about low grade products but popular branded goods here.

Mustafa Centre Singapore

Mustafa Singapore is the one and only shopping center that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week whole year round in Singapore. If none has used the slogan before, I would have used it on Mustafa…”The Shopping Mall that Never Sleeps”. Mustafa is located in the heart of Singapore Little India and many has called it the shining jewel in Little India’s crown.

We met up at the entrance of Mustafa at about 1.30am. At this hour, there was already a shopping frenzy at the shopping mall. The popularity of Mustafa Singapore has attracted not just the locals but many budget travelers from India, Middle East and Africa looking for some good buy.

I have shopped in Mustafa Center a couple of times and I quite like it. However, for travelers or shoppers seeking for atmosphere and comfort, this is not a place for you. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights, this place is jam packed with shoppers and it could post a challenge to get to what you are looking for or find the best priced item. Although Singapore is a relatively safe place, it is still advisable to watch over your belongings in a crowded place like Mustafa. Better be safe than sorry.

Multilevel Shopping Store

Mustafa Singapore is a 24-hour multilevel store, offering almost everything ranging from food, luggage, medicines, apparels, and electronics to gold jewellery. We jostled against the others on the crowded platform and managed to land at the electronic section located on the 1st floor. The sales personnel were busy serving others and we waited sometime before we had the opportunity to be served. Ian straight away asked for the brand and model of the MP3 player he was looking for.

After checking the price, I could see a faint smile on his face and he was ready to proceed on to the cashier.

“Hey hang on…aren’t you going to check out the specifications of the player, the warranty period or some comparisons with other models before you make a decision?”

“Come on Clifford, it will be dawn by the time we find out all these. Let’s go!” replied Ian.

Packed Mustafa Centre

Ian explained that in a crowded place like Mustafa Singapore, it is very inconvenient to find out details about product information and many of the sales personnel here are not too well equipped with product knowledge. So, very importantly, you need to do your homework before proceeding to Mustafa Center. Cool…another lesson learned today!

We roamed around the mall for a while looking for some sale items. We noticed that the luggage section was extremely crowded with tourists probably looking for extra baggage to take back their purchases in Mustafa Singapore. We went on down to Basement 2 where the apparels section was. The sport shoes and gears were branded and authentic and sold at unbelievable cheap rates. Many of these items were almost a good 20 bucks or so less then what you have to pay in places like Orchard.

Singapore souvenirs are also much cheaper in Mustafa Singapore as compared to elsewhere. We were marveled by the selections of chocolates in Mustafa. Some so special that you don’t find it in other super mart and they were not even expensive. The temptation was just too overpowering and I admit I got succumbed.

Look out for sign of great sale items by observing for horde of Indians crowd at a particular spot. Indians are good at looking for the best deals and if you spot a crowd, you can rest assure that there must be a sale going on. Indeed a good way of verifying that you are getting a good deal at Mustafa.

Night Shopping at Mustafa Centre

I was astonished to learn that Mustafa offers many other services that are so diversified, such as air ticketing and travel booking services. They provide the best air-fare to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and even United States and Europe. Well, I am not too sure about the rest but I do know that many of my Indian friends only frequent Mustafa for tickets to India. So, I gathered that the airfare deals at Mustafa must be pretty attractive.

Besides ticketing, other services that come under the same umbrella are travel insurance, visa processing services, foreign exchange and a gold super-mart. It was simply mind-blowing to see that Mustafa have 3 floors meant for the gold jewellery.

If you are in a mood for Indian food, they are everywhere around the vicinity. Mustafa is surrounded by restaurants and eateries, and you will be spoilt for choices. On the other side of the street when you exit through the jewellery or pharmacy section at level 1, there is a whole suit of restaurants; you will have difficulties making a decision.

Mustafa Singapore is a well known shopping center in Singapore but not necessary the best you can find. You may not necessary get the best service here and it is often congested, but given the deals you’ll get, I will be happy to take the rough with the smooth.

Shopping at Mustafa Singapore has been an interestingly unique experience for me. It is a one stop shop where you can get almost anything under the sun…hmm…should I put across as anything under the sun and moon since it operates round the clock. With its wide selection and impressive size, this is not your usual 24 hours convenient store.

How to get there.

From Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, transfered to the purple (north-east) line and alight at Farrer Park MRT station. Mustafa Singapore is located at the corner of Syed Alwi Road and Serangoon Road in Little India.
