Do You Know Where to Find Western Vegetarian Food in Singapore?

Vegan Burger
I am not sure if there is such thing call Western Vegetarian Food in Singapore. After all in an oriental society where most of us are Chinese, we normally order Chinese Vegetarian Food.
But having said that, how about my western friends who are vegetarian by diet and not by religion and which are not Chinese like us? Rather they became vegetarian because of health reasons…
In one of the instance, an old friend of mine, Moris, met up with me after almost 10 years of not seeing each other. I suppose we have a long way to chat up and finding back the lost time. Like me, Moris has changed a lot in appearance and behaviour (older and subdued, gone are those wild old days behaviour), though that is certainly not surprising at all. But what stunned me was that in one of those moments when I pop out the question of where he would like me to treat him for dinner!
“Is there any Western Vegetarian Restaurant in Singapore?” he hesitantly asked. I can feel his discomfort. I guess he must be worried that he might not be able to find western vegetarian food in Singapore.
He was never a vegetable eater during those college days. To what I still hold a little thought of him… he always will go for fish n chips or steak. “Why the sudden change in diet?” I couldn’t help but poised this question out of curiosity. Little then I realized that he suffered from some heart problems few years back and upon the doctor’s advise, it would be easier for his heart to take on vegetarian diets.

Vegan Fish n Chips
My surprise reaction was not a surprise to him when I found out that he is a western vegetarian. My first question was “Did you get enough energy for being a vegetarian?” Moris is well built (80kg and 1.8m tall) and much bigger than I am. My next question was “Do you mind eating Chinese vegetarian food?”. I was really not prepared. This time round I was really caught! Where could I find western vegetarian food in Singapore? Would it taste as good as those western vegetarian food Moris had eaten? I really did not want to disappoint him…
I flagged a cab and hopefully the cab driver would have some idea. After all, taxi drivers are supposed to be the best ambassadors to the tourists coming to Singapore. They are widely travelled in Singapore and nothing can escape their sight in this small island.

Lao Di Fang Western Vegetarian Food
Thankfully after a few tries, a friendly cab driver drove us to Lao Di Fang Vegetarian Restaurant. Situated at 1 Woodland Square # 03-02 Causeway point, they serve both Chinese and Western Vegetarian Food.
Filled with tables accompanied with nice cushion seats, the restaurant exemplified a sense of oriental ambience with lanterns decorating the walls and ceilings. Being a Chinese restaurant, we thought our choices will be limited, but to our pleasant surprise, they served a broad variety of western vegetarian cuisine.
I ordered a set meal of pork rib rice which came together with rice, soup and vegetable, while Moris ordered a dish of salmon and a set steak meal. They even served roasted chicken and sour pork too. Moris told me that these foods are mostly tofu based.
What a shame! In the end it was him who educated me what vegetarian food was all about. We went on to order some beverage drink as well. Hmm…they serve bubble tea too.
We certainly had a great time there chit-chatting and our topics centered mainly on vegetarian food. It seemed that Moris really enjoyed the food there… If you will to ask me for any recommendation… this is certainly the place to go if you have any western vegetarian friend coming from overseas.
